My name is Debbie, and I am a double-lung transplant recipient. Diagnosed in 2000 with COPD, I lived with my disease for eight years, coming to UMC for a correct diagnosis of Alpha 1-Antitrypsin Disease, an inherited fatal disease. As my illness progressed, my husband and I were forced to relocate closer to UMC once I was listed for transplant in 2006. This left us with a mortgage as well as the additional costs for housing in Tucson. No one can predict a catastrophic illness. I took care of my family, worked for many years, had health insurance, a savings plan, and 401Ks. I thought I was prepared and protected in life. In 2008 I was blessed with a transplant. I thank God and my donor family everyday, as they allowed my family to continue, while letting go of a part of their own. The cost of this gift for me would be my home and self-dignity. I never thought I would be forced into making the decision "medication or house payment". That should never be an option for anyone. My life is full now and I'm paying it forward in hopes of lessening the financial burden for others through Unity for Life Tucson.
