On January 27, 2013, Michael R. Waldrum, MD, MS, MBA , began his tenure as President and CEO of The University of Arizona Health Network (UAHN) . In his new role, he leads the Health Network’s two hospitals, clinics, health plans, and physician practice plan.
An experienced hospital administrator, Dr. Waldrum came to UAHN from the University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham (UAB), where he was the hospital’s CEO and also vice president of the UAB Health System. Prior to those two roles, he had served as chief operating officer and chief information officer of UAB. He had been a member of the medical staff of the UAB School of Medicine since 1995, in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
After graduation from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Dr. Waldrum completed his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and then received a master’s degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Waldrum is a board-certified specialist in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and pulmonology. At UAB, he maintained an active teaching and clinical practice, and he has indicated that he hopes to do the same within UAHN. His management expertise is in applying aggregate data in operational clinical decisions; in intensive-care outcomes management; and in health-information management to measure performance effectiveness.
In a letter sent to all UAHN staff members immediately after he assumed his leadership position, Dr. Waldrum wrote:
“Last week, a friend’s mother was admitted to UAMC. It was evident that she was treated with compassion, dignity, and respect at all times, and that her caregivers were extremely professional, patient, and genuine. ‘If these dedicated and caring professionals are a reflection of the entire UAHN staff,’ my friend wrote me, ‘You have a fantastic team to lead as you assume your new role!’ I could not agree more. Thank you for the exemplary care you provide to our patients and this community. I am honored and excited to join the UAHN team and look forward to working with each and every one of you.”
